A Collection of Songs dedicated to some people that I know, To My “Colleagues” is a set for mixed voices and piano. Each song was written for a specific person and uses their name cyphered into music as a motive.
Toy Shop - Tenor (D3-C5)
Is a comic story parodying Pinocchio, wear in a toy maker is frightened when a fairy unexpectedly brings one of his toys to life and smashes the thing to pieces.
To a Deaf God - Baritone (B2-G4)
Has the singer shouting at and cursing God because of the loss of a loved one.
Grasshoppers- Baritone (C3-Fb4)
Is a field report about grasshoppers given by a very eager, if slightly misguided, child.
To a Honied Sap - Mezzo (A3-E5)
A sapphic love song that details how much the singers loves this wonderful person and that they wouldn’t change it for the world.
The Lamppost - Tenor (C3-A4)
A heart-wrenching letter written to a love one who is inaccessible but the writer refuses to believe is gone.
Hush Now - Baritone (B2-D#4)
Is a lullaby sung by an angel to a soldier dying on the battle field. It is a mournful yet comforting song of reassurance and peace.
A Simple Man (Step On Me) - Tenor (E3-B4/E5)
Details the desires and aches of a perfectly normal and well adjusted member of society. In a frenzied patter-song style alla Gilbert and Sullivan.
Snow -Soprano (C4-A5)
A very somber and mournful piece where a recent loss has caused the singer to watch the snow outside cover the earth and wish that they might be covered up and taken away as well.
The Shepherd of Sleep - Baritone (C#3-Eb4)
Is the song of a sleep demon trying to steel away a person in their dreams with empty promises and false safety.
Confessions to My Mother -Baritone (G2-D4)
Shows a young man struggling to tell his mother about the person he has fallen in love with and his worry and fear over how she’ll react.
Memory - Mezzo (A3-G5)
Is from the perspective of a person desperately wanting a loved one with Alzheimer’s to remember them and getting frustrated and then guilty when it they love cannot.
Death, Pain, Loss, Despair! - Coloratura (C#4-D6)
Is a unserious yet challengingly virtuosic song where the singer tells an ex/potential suitor just how little they meant to her.
